Why do you compose?
To start off, I love music. Every part of my musical career has made me the person I am today, and with that, I can grow with my musical skills. Not only do I love music, but I simply love making music. It is so much fun for me, and because of that, I have won awards, met new fellow composers, and shaped my own qualities that I carry today.

How did you start composing?
My first composition, “Autumn” was composed when I was six, one year after my piano lessons started. At that time, I had no computer software to notate my music, and did not have the knowledge or patience to write it down on paper. I had to remember it all through the years, but it was not hard since it was extremely simplistic. Long before that, I always liked improvising on the piano after my piano practice. After many months of experimenting and playing around on my new instrument, my first composing finally came. From that point on, I always liked improvising on the piano. The more compositions I wrote, the more I felt the urge to notate them. I started notating them on paper when I was about ten. When the music complexity grew, it got far more difficult to notate on paper, so I got my first composition software program (Finale) around age twelve.

What is your inspiration in composing?
My inspiration comes from many different places. For instance, there are certain composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Grieg, and Rachmaninoff that directly inspire me. In addition, past experiences and future experiences I hope to accomplish compel me to compose a piece about an experience or sensation. Lastly, my artwork also inspires me in my world of composing.

What are your hobbies?
Aside from composition and piano, I love to travel, hike, and get outdoors. My favorite destinations are Europe and the Pacific Northwest. For sports, I love tennis, swimming, and running. I also like to paint and draw artwork that relates to my own compositions.

Do you play any other instruments aside from piano?
I have been playing piano for nearly ten years, but have not played other instruments except for violin. I started violin at about eight, but stopped after a couple of years to concentrate on other activities such as piano and composing.

What are your goals in the future?
Whether I pursue composition in the future, I always want to have a musical aspect in my career. Since I’m just starting high school, I have plenty of time to decide my future focus, but at the moment, the power of music has grown on me through the years. Music has the divine power to change lives. It seems like an idyllic career. In the future, I would like to meet new people, win new awards, further develop my composition and piano skills, and most of all, make the world a happier, better place with the music I have to share.

Who is your favorite composer?
My all time favorite composer is Fryderyk Chopin, but I also enjoy listening to music by Debussy, Grieg, and Rachmaninoff. I also like listening to more contemporary musicians such as Ludovico Einaudi.
